The story of a medieval chemist who actually succeeded in persuading people that he found the elixir of immortality.
Story:
Johann Conrad Dippel was born in 1673 in the castle Frankenstein, located in the town of Darmstadt, Germany. The son of a prominent Lutheran pastor, Dippel was raised with strict religious values. However, he also displayed a great interest in science and anatomy from an early age. In fact, it is said that he learned about animal dissection by watching his father's medical students at work.
When he was just eighteen years old, Dippel started working as an assistant to a local apothecary. It was during this time that he began conducting his own experiments in alchemy and chemistry.
Dippel is less well-known for his medical achievements and more infamous for his unethical experiments. He is best remembered for creating a mixture of animal bones and hides which he called Dippel's Oil. He hoped that the concoction would create an elixir of life, but it was more likely to cause infection and death. Despite this, Dippel's Oil was used in some German hospitals up until the early 20th century. Some believe that Dippel was the inspiration for Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, as he was rumored to have conducted experiments on human corpses in an attempt to create a life-giving elixir.
He loved dissecting animals, and some believe he even stole human bodies from Castle Frankenstein to use for his experiments. Dippel's knowledge of anatomy and medicine was far ahead of his time, and he may have been on the verge of discovering the secret to creating life himself. Unfortunately, his reputation as a mad scientist overshadowed his accomplishments, and he is now mostly remembered for his twisted experiments in horror.
